The Cornwalls Are Gone, by James Patterson and Brendan DuBois
Army intelligence officer Amy Cornwall is skilled at dealing with scenarios that would make most people blanch. But nothing in her professional career prepares her for the nightmare she steps into when she comes home to find her husband and young daughter missing. Contacted by the kidnapper, she’s told there’s only one way to save her family: she must somehow secure the release of an unnamed captive. She has two days to accomplish her mission, and if she fails, her family will be killed. Amy has no choice but to go rogue, using her training, contacts, and desperation to find out who took her family and why.

The Chef, by James Patterson and Max DiLallo
You might have heard about this one when it was first published on Facebook Messenger, a bold and innovative experiment. Police detective and food truck chef Caleb Rooney serves New Orleans justice and a hot meal, but as Mardi Gras approaches, he finds himself accused of murder. (It probably doesn’t help that his food truck is called the Killer Chef.) Shortly thereafter, Rooney discovers a plot to attack New Orleans being brewed up by homegrown terrorists. Racing against time, Rooney must clear his own name while preventing a slaughter in his beloved city as it gears up for Mardi Gras—the perfect tasty backdrop for a tense thriller.

Target: Alex Cross, by James Patterson
If you’re already a huge fan of Alex Cross, this is a perfect opportunity to grab the latest in the series. It opens on a somber scene of mourning as thousands of people gather in Washington, D.C., to mourn the president—among them Alex Cross, whose wife, Bree, has just become D.C.’s chief of detectives. When a sniper takes out a member of the president’s cabinet, it falls to Bree to solve the crime—and it’s clear her job is on the line. Cross begins to suspect the sniper is only getting started, and as usual he’s right. Soon, the country is plunged into a violent crisis like nothing it’s ever seen before.

The 17th Suspect, by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro
How can you resist a book series called the Women’s Murder Club? Answer: you can’t. The seventeenth go-round in the series focuses on Sergeant Lindsay Boxer and ADA Yuki Castellano. Boxer is approached by a homeless woman who tells her the city’s homeless population is being hunted by a killer and the police are slow-walking the investigation. When Lindsay’s initial inquiries seem to confirm this, she’s outraged and goes on the warpath—with unexpected consequences that are serious enough for her friends in the Club to urge her to step back. Meanwhile, Yuki catches a rape case involving a man accusing his female superior of assault, and she thinks she can make the charges stick. But as she moves forward, the case seems to dissolve under her, and her opponent in the courtroom finds ways of getting under her skin. As Yuki struggles, Lindsay finds herself targeted by the killer she was hunting, and both women deal with personal problems that complicate their professional lives to the breaking point.

Juror #3, by James Patterson and Nancy Allen
Patterson teams up with Allen, a former attorney, to tell the story of Ruby Bozarth. Ruby is new to the Mississippi bar and the town of Rosedale, but she’s barely got time to find her bearings before she’s assigned to a sensational case: a rich girl is dead, and a college football star stands accused. The prosecutor and judge think Ruby’s inexperience will help them ram through a quick conviction, but she’s determined to prove them wrong. With a little help from a fellow attorney and a short order cook with a lot of secrets, she mounts a defense—and begins to suspect the biggest obstacle to justice might just be the jurors on the case, who have secrets of their own.

Ambush, by James Patterson and James O. Born
Detective Michael Bennett is another great character in Patterson’s thrillers. In the latest in the series, he receives an anonymous tip leading him into an attempted assassination. Quickly he realizes it’s the work of a professional, who soon targets his own family, while serving perfect red-herring clues to keep Bennett and his fellow cops chasing their tails. As Bennett puts the pieces together while protecting everyone he cares about, he realizes that the assassin’s motives are related to those of the rival cartels trying to corner the city’s drug traffic—cartels that may have joined forces to take out their main obstacle, Detective Michael Bennett.

Dog Diaries: A Middle School Story, by James Patterson and Steven Butler, with Richard Watson (illustrator)
If you’re a kid—or you know a kid—who loves dogs, pick up this crowd-pleaser by the newest member of the Khatchadorian family—their adopted dog Junior! Junior is the goodest boy, but he has a little trouble obeying rules and understanding his pet humans. He loves waking up Rafe (who he calls Ruff Catch-a-Dogy-Bone) by tapping him on the head with his paw, because Rafe takes him on walks to the park for adventures! When one of those adventures see Junior slip his leash and cause a lot of trouble, he’s forced to go to a doggy obedience school run by a mean trainer—but Junior’s certain he’ll graduate with honors. The back of the book includes a list of fun activities to try with your own doggo, and a glossary of “doglish” to help you understand what your dog pup is trying to communicate.

Middle School: Born to Rock, by James Patterson and Chris Tebbetts
Middle school struggles are real, and the Middle School series is hilarious, fun, and very, very real. The 11th book in the series continues the adventures of the Khatchadorian kids, older brother Rafe and younger sister Georgia. Normally, Georgia can’t stand her annoying brother, but when a secret crush, a class project, and a battle of the bands that could lead to a jam session with her favorite rock star all converge on her middle school life, she might be willing to make an exception and ask for his help. Georgia gets her all-girl band, We Stink, together, while dealing with resident Mean Girl Missy Trillin and her Princess Patrol on top of everything else—because as every middle schooler knows, life is complicated.

Barnes & Noble Bookseller Danielle Patten Goes Above & Beyond

Warning: preg_match_all(): Compilation failed: invalid range in character class at offset 7 in /homepages/23/d339537987/htdocs/do/wp-content/themes/p2/inc/mentions.php on line 77

Assistant Store Manager Danielle Patten, from our store in Salem, New Hampshire (Store 2605), was selected as November’s Above & Beyond winner, and as our first quarterly winner! For this recognition, she received a letter from our Chairman Len Riggio and will be receiving a $1,000 prize.

Check out the nomination that led to her selection below:

“Each day, we are tasked with making sales, conversion, average transactionm and more. Our teams work together feverishly to make each and every customer interaction the best it can be, and every now and then as a Store Manager something happens beyond the day to day drive that shows us just how amazing our teams really are.

I arrived on Wednesday to begin my day like any other, and as soon as I was settled my ASM Danielle Patten informed me of a tragedy that had occurred in the early hours of the morning. The local Chief of Police in a nearby town had a fire break out in his home. He, his wife, two children, and dog escaped the fire, but with only the clothes they were wearing. His wife is a teacher in our town, and they are frequent shoppers at our store. This tragedy was worsened because of the road conditions. Firefighters and water tankers were delayed due to the icy conditions, as the roads had been a sheet of ice from the storm we received that day. Their home was a total loss.

Danielle and her connections within the community found out what the children’s favorite books were and made them a priority for book donations. Gail Upton, a long-time bookseller, added hats, gloves, socks, and blankets. By the end of their shifts, we had enough donations filling multiple bags—enough items to keep the family warm and the children’s favorite books back in their hands. We even had a donation of a NOOK to replace the one that the wife had lost. It brought tears to our eyes each time a donation was made. For this family’s children to have their favorite books back in their hands knowing it might bring some comfort to them on their Thanksgiving was heartwarming.

There are no words to truly express what I witnessed on a day when most are hustling and bustling to get their Thanksgiving dinner plans in order.

On Thanksgiving when I was asked what I was thankful for, all I could think of was the generosity and caring I witnessed from my team, and the impact it had on a local family. It really is what we are all about, and in the end what we do each day is about giving back—supporting our community when needed any way we can.”

    Congratulations, Danielle!
